About high-pressure sports lights

The gas discharge lamp was invented around the year 1900, in the 1960s it was improved to a metal-halogen vapor lamp. The lamp works as follows: electrons of metals collide with each other due to an electric charge, as a result of which the whole is in a higher energy state. When the electrons return to their normal state, they then emit light. Gas discharge lamps work through combustion, just like an old-fashioned light bulb, the gas discharge lamp therefore has a limited shelf life. Unfortunately, the development of this lamp has been at a standstill for years, so it's time for something new.

Since the invention of the metal halide vapor lamp, sports lighting has become increasingly efficient. That is why since the 1960s it has become increasingly pleasant to play sports on the outdoor sports fields.

Why LED sports field lighting?

The development of sports field lighting has certainly not stood still. Our society is becoming more sustainable and the Dutch sports fields are part of that. The arrival of LED lighting makes this sustainability on the sports fields possible. A lot of energy can be saved and that provides direct benefits for the association and the environment. Saving money and drastically reducing CO2 emissions, that is the future.

But not only the environment is spared, the efficiency of LED lighting is higher than that of gas discharge lamps. Conventional sports lighting has an output of up to 110 lumens per watt. LED sports field lighting has yields of up to 150 lumens per watt. As a result, there is more light output with less wattage.

Advantages of LED sports field lighting

There are many advantages to LED sports field lighting, a number of advantages are briefly listed below.

  • Light quality: LED comes in variants up to 6000K (Kelvin), this white light is pleasant during sports

  • Dimmable and controllable variants require more work, the energy savings partly depend on how this is handled.

Applicable for every sport

Whether you practice tennis, hockey, football or jeu de boules, LED lighting can be used everywhere. The current fixtures can be removed from the light poles, the new LED sports lighting can be installed without any problems on the existing light pole and via the existing power supply.

LED can be connected to 230V or 400V, the connection can take place without adjustments or with only a small adjustment in the meter space. The old metal-halogen lamp is disposed of and recycled. Every situation requires a different wattage of sports field lighting and different advice, so let yourself be well informed.

Light standards

Every sport has to deal with minimum lighting requirements. The lighting standards have been drawn up by the relevant sports association together with the NOC*NSF and with recommendations from the NSVV (foundation for lighting science). Lighting standards depend on a number of factors such as the speed of the game, the size of the playing equipment (e.g. the ball) and the dimensions of the field. Different lux values ​​are therefore customary for each sport. Compliance with the light standards, especially in the higher sports classes, is required if one wants to participate in the level.

Types of LED sports field lighting

There are a number of well-known and lesser-known LED luminaires available for the sports world. The most important features that an LED sports lamp must have are: reliability and the ability to dim. Below you will briefly find a number of different LED luminaires with their characteristics. Each luminaire works through different controls, the best known being DALI.

Philips (Optivision)

The Optivision Gen. 2nd lamp for sports lighting from Philips The lamp consists of 3 vertically adjustable LED panels of approximately 490 Watt each, in full consumption the wattage is approximately 1,470. The second version of the Philips Optivision only uses the top and bottom LED panel. This is ideal for sports fields where less light is required. The driver can be installed on the back of the luminaire or at the bottom of the mast. The system can be dimmed and switched via DALI.

AAA-Lux (WS series)

AAA-Lux has the WS series that can be controlled with its own operating system (LCMS). Thanks to its own platform for consumption statistics and dimming, this LED unit is a brand in itself. Like all luminaires, the WS series can be installed on any light pole without any problems. At 32 KG, AAA-Lux has one of the heavier lamps in this market. The module consists of 4, 6 or 8 individually adjustable LED panels of approximately 200 watts each. You may have heard of light efficiency, which is measured in lumens (light output) per watt. Here it is quite high, namely 140 lumens / watt.

Lumosa (Campo Sportivo)

This originally Italian LED fixture also has a high light efficiency of no less than 150 lumen/watt. Just like the WS series, the Campo Sportivo is made up of several modules to prevent shadow effect. With Lumosa Touch, the lamp can be dimmed in its entirety and switched in, for example, training or competition lighting. Consumption data can also be tracked using an app, times for switching on and off can be set and other settings can be made for each sports field. The heaviest model weighs only 23KG, very light for comparable LED fixtures.
